Building a Life

A transition guide for Kansans

Circle of Support

We all need support throughout our lives and this is no different for youth/young adults with disabilities. In fact, it may be even more critical to their success.

A Circle of Support is simply a group of people with whom to share life’s journey. This group can give youth and young adults opportunities to experience life to the fullest. What can a Circle of Support do?

  • Offer support through major life events
  • Assist and guide towards independence
  • Provide a safety net of people to lean on and confide in
  • Offer a sense of community
  • Build relationships
  • Promote and support self-advocacy

Having a Circle of Support is important in transition because it allows youth and young adults to be at the center of their transition plan and journey to adulthood. This group can serve as a sounding board for ideas and options for the future.

Questions to ask your young adult:

  • Who should be and who do you want to be in your Circle of Support?
  • How important are friendships and relationships to you?
  • Are you in charge of your transition plan?
  • What supports (financial, medical, etc.) will you need and who do you want to help you make these types of decisions?
